Vision Church is built upon 12 core values, which are central to who we are, all we do, and how we want to reflect Christ to others. In this series, we will take each Core Value, break it down and explore it together.
CORE VALUE: ‘We Are Family’
“One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24 NIV
We are all born into a family, and every family looks very different, our families come in many different shapes, colours, dynamics, and sizes. Perhaps today, we live with a different family than we were born into, but it’s family to us.
In this current ‘lockdown’ season, many of us are getting to spend a lot of time with our natural family, because we are at home in isolation. For most of us, this has been an opportunity to spend more time with those we love, but for some who live alone, or in a broken or abusive home situation, this has been a lonely and difficult time. However, no matter our natural family situation, when we give our lives to God, he places us in a family – His family. In the bible, it says, “But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another” 1 John 1. This verse talks about ‘sharing life together’, in other words, we become family.
The incredible thing about God is that whether we feel we have a family or not,
He puts us in a family – HIS family!
I experienced this in a whole new way this year… My and husband and I are both only children, and our parents are elderly, we have 4 children and our oldest son Josh was engaged to an incredible girl from Colombia. The wedding date was set for February 2020, in Bogota, Colombia. Due to the distance, only the 6 of us would be able to attend, we thought we would have no other family with us. This was not the case! I am so grateful to God for my incredible spiritual family, who all rose to the challenge to attend the wedding with us! In January 2020, 25 of us flew to Bogota, Colombia.
When we don’t have a natural family, God never leaves us alone, he puts us in a family.
Psalm 68 says, “To the fatherless he is a father. To the widow he is a champion friend. To the lonely he makes them part of a family.”
Today, if you are alone, God wants to meet with you. He is the one who will fill you with His perfect peace, assurance, joy, and love. NOTHING compares to his love, but that is not the end, He also desires to give you the best spiritual family!
